Enviro-Shelter Experiment Spring 2013 ( Wk-12 )

Today we got the screen doors installed on both doors in the Solarium. The cross breezes are a added bonus, as well the best part is the insect barrier. Also the ceiling fan is installed. We choose one with the most CFM within our range of style. The inverter operates the fan without any humming at all. The unit is very quiet and will be a plus this Spring while finishing the inside as the days are heating up.

Of course the objective here is to be as close to 100% self sufficient at the end of this years experiment as possible. Of course we are learning a lot as we go, and yes we have made a few mistakes. Well not really mistakes if you look at them as a learning curve. I guess the final objective is the documentation, and the experience. Time is always on our side as we implement more and more systems.  The investments continue to pay back quickly especially when mirrored against counterparts out there, with a mortgage, high energy cost, no supplement food sources, or alternative transportation other than expensive fuel based technologies.

Wow!  Okay May Day!  Today the PV module came for the finish on the Wind/Solar Hybrid system at the Solar Cabin. After the installation right away did notice a nice increase in the energy equation. Next we will tie in a few loads onto the system to give all that extra power something to do.

The way it turned out the module fitted very well right between the two solar hot water collectors which served very well as a mount along with some aluminum channel at the lower base. Okay the trick is simply to think smaller when it comes to homes, yet more efficient.

Up early and working on the interior of the Solarium installing a ladder to access the upper level, also replacing a few glass frames up there that were temporary with the more permanent glass that was just delivered. The older panes had become milky on the inside. In total there will be three that will need to be changed out.

You can see the difference between the newly exchanged glass on the lower left as opposed to the one in the lower middle that is still milky, and is slated for exchange.
" In newer windows, there should never be fog between the panes. As windows age, the seal between the panes of glass can begin to fail, enabling moisture to seep in between them. Windows continually exposed to the Sun are more likely to experience seal failure sooner than other windows in a home. The amount of time it takes for a window’s seal to fail depends on the building materials used, the design of the glass and the window, and many other factors. "
We knew some of the recycled windows were beginning to fog at the time of construction but we went ahead and fitted them to establish the wooden frames, and weather seal as well. We are about to begin finished carpentry inside the Solarium so it is best to go ahead and do the glass work now. All the inside glass frames are screwed into place as to allow easy future maintenance. Other than that we created a new pasture area for the Animals, which are now barred from the main garden area. We began tilling up that area for cultivation. Also we are making a garden design including more raised beds, irrigation, a orchard, and vineyard.

Today we are continuing to till the ground in the large main garden area. The Animals are loving the new pasture area, and are staying over there most of the time now. Later in the afternoon it began to rain which timed out very well garden wise. We are using a strip farming method for several reasons. The area between the tilled rows act as erosion barriers, plus this area will be used for raised beds, with some grassy areas left for mulch purposes. We laid a main water line down the center of the garden area last year so it is there already to be tapped into for further irrigation arrangements when needed.

Today after a chilly and rainy morning the weather finally cleared up and we got all the designated glass replaced in the Solarium.

Sunday is here in all it's glory. The Sun is out full force burning off all this fog.

May has started with a flare as this giant explosion ejected from the Sun on the third.
We have been seeing increased numbers of solar flares over the past year or more, as the sun’s normal 11-year activity cycle is ramps up toward solar maximum, expected in late 2013.

A bright a shinning Monday has come about to present itself onto the Earth this fine day.

Okay, the overall theory here is that as we introduce more and more self empowered energy systems onto this farm so the profit margins will increase over time as we eliminate overhead expenses.
The purpose of any farm is to produce, and that is what we intend to do.  Produce!
On the other hand, Quote,
" You got people in government burning the midnight oil trying to figure out how to levy more taxes onto the working people of this society. Now the governments are trying to put taxes on internet sales basically stealing money from the profits of some very enterprising people that can do business without a bunch of bricks and mortar cluttering up the country side with inefficient outdated business practices which require parking lots, highways and petrol-chemicals."

What we really need government to do is to get busy helping implement transportation delivery systems that does not require gasoline or the like just to get products, and services to the good people of this planet.

Today there is still a lot of wetness around from the rains last night but we got the garden near the greenhouse tilled up right before the rains started.

We also took the hydro-electric plant apart to test for any unusual wear that might be occurring within the unit as well to grease the unit with a flesh application.

After reinstalling the unit that morning we tested the electrical output by operating the electric weed eater to clear away all the weeds in the garden area near the greenhouse.  The test went very well.

Today we will continue planting in all the garden plots around the farm for a very beautiful Day has arrived here, so gardening is under way full steam.
Okay, some have gone so far as labeling this whole experiment as, " Anti-Government "
when this is just the opposite, we are not advocating " Anti-Government" yet we are against foolishness and waste. People in government as a whole should be the first to embrace the future by setting examples for the people to follow, not by taxing them to death, but by showing new and better ways of investing the money they have already earned.
